The djembe (pronounced JEM-bay) is a skin covered drum, shaped like a large goblet, and originated in West Africa. The root of its name means, "everyone gather together".
The advantage of the djembe is that it can produce a variety of tones. Depending on hand technique and position on the head of the drum, the djembe can produce deep lows, sharp highs, and a range of mid tones inbetween.
