Doumbek
Doumbek, Doumbec, Dumbeg, Derbeki, Darbouka & Tabla (Goblet drum synonymous names used by various cultures) It is generally assumed the doumbek originated in the Middle East, but not so. It actually did not arrive there until after the time of Christ. The first doumbek shell artifacts were carbon dated back to 4,000 BC and were found in of all places, Bohemia. There was a Celtic tribe called the Boiis that moved south instead of west like the other tribes. It appears they developed the doumbek there. Mid-East Mfg. made their first doumbek in 1974 using moulds and a one-step firing process. The ceramic Doumbeks are made by hand in Florida. Glazes are hand mixed and are unique on each drum. Synthetic heads are standard. Goatskin and fishskin heads are also available. Instructional videos, cassette tapes, CDs and books are available.
