Sarod
The Sarod evolved from the Rebab; some refer to the sarod as a bass Rebab. The sarod is a relatively recent instrument, having its origins perhaps no more than 200 years ago. The Sarod's overall shape is like a pendulum - pointed and thin on top, at the peg box, and full and round at the bottom, the resonator. 17 metal strings run along the steel faceplate and over movable frets on this rosewood instrument. There are 8 played strings, 2 drone strings and 7 sympathetic strings. The bridge is set on a membranous soundboard. Floral inlays and a brass toomba add to the visual interest. The sarod is played with a pick made of coconut shell.
